We all look forward to those times when we can relax and feel calm, whether that’s on holiday, walking along a beach, or simply when we have some time to unwind in the comfort of our own home. But the reality is that feeling of calm and being at peace with oneself comes from within us all, the environment simply helps.

Tranquillity is always just below the surface, we just need to know how to reach it and then choose to stay in that calm haven throughout the day, no matter what life throws at us – a busy meeting, being stuck in traffic or rushing to get a job done.

“Within you there is a stillness and a sanctuary to which you can retreat at any time” – Herman Hesse.

In his book, ‘Mans Search for Meaning, Viktor Frankl – a holocaust survivor wrote of his experiences, “When we are no longer able to challenge a situation, we are challenged to change ourselves”. Thankfully most of us will enjoy a life free from the horrors Frankl endured, but we all have the opportunity to change ourselves and how we react to situations on a daily basis.

By finding our inner calm we can all benefit in our day-today lives:

* More tolerance and patience

* Feeling more capable

* Freedom from stress and anxiety

* Improved quality of sleep

Here are my three tips to help you dive beneath the surface and find your inner calm.

Throughout your day several situations may arise which threaten your tranquillity, but your reaction is a choice – one you have the power to determine. Set yourself a challenge – tell yourself ‘No one or nothing can interfere with my calmness today’.

Think of an image or a memory that takes you back to a time or a place where you accessed your inner calm. It could be an image of a holiday or of a time when you felt completely relaxed, free of the stresses of daily life. The image you use need not be real, use your imagination if you like to create your ideal image of tranquillity. Having a photo or an object to remind you of those feelings, which you can keep on your phone or close by, can help to remind you of that calm sensation. Recall that image or memory throughout the day as many times as required to restore or maintain your calm.
